For the first part of Game 1 of the 2022 World Series, the Houston Astros were on a high. That is, until the Philadelphia Phillies started to get going against Justin Verlander of the Astros.
At one point in the game, the Astros were in the lead 5-0. The Phillies later trimmed their deficit to 5-1 and then 5-3 before finally tying the score at 5.
After the teams entered extra innings, Philadelphia's catcher JT Realmuto hit a solo home run to give his club a decisive advantage.
For Verlander, it wasn't the most attractive night. In actuality, the aspiring Hall of Famer had a historically awful night. His current career ERA is the worst in World Series history.
After five innings, five earned runs on six hits, two walks, and five strikeouts, Verlander departed the game.
Realmuto tied the score in the top of the fifth. He hit a deep left-center field double with runners on first and second.
