A 20-year-old Phillies minor league pitcher passed away from cancer

The Philadelphia Phillies announced on Thursday that minor league pitcher Cory Phelan has passed away at the age of 20.

Phelan was on the injured list after receiving a non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis in April, a blood malignancy.

After being signed by the Phillies as a free agent in August 2020, he had participated in five games in the rookie league, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The untimely death of Corey Phelan has left "the Phillies family with deep sorrow," according to a statement released by the team on Thursday.

"Everyone in his vicinity was positively affected by Corey's presence and selflessness.

Even though he had a great deal of enthusiasm for baseball, his love for his family and his firm religion came first."
