Beards and facial hair: What science says

Gross! Beards laced with faeces was based on a single local news account, not a scientific investigation

Quest Diagnostics facility in Albuquerque told a reporter that a few bearded volunteers had faeces in their beards 

 but this was not a countrywide trend. Just because some males in New Mexico have crap in their beards doesn't mean you do.

Recent research says beards have more bacteria than dogs. A beard may require an extra shower or wipe.

According to Australian research, beards can block 90% of UV radiation. Bearded men may be less prone to skin cancer on their face and neck.

While beards aren't as sun-safe as sunscreen, they do shield UV rays, says research author Alfio Parisi
