Fifty of the Greatest Sandwiches Ever Created

The Francesinha has its roots in Porto.

It's essentially a drunken grilled cheese sandwich that takes inspiration from the French croque monsieur.

Wet-cured ham, linguiça (smoke-cured pig sausage), fresh sausage, steak, or roast meat are piled high.

Then the whole thing is smothered in a hearty tomato-beer sauce and melted cheese.

The croque-monsieur is one of the greatest examples of the French penchant for bread, cheese, and mayonnaise.

A spoonful of this dish, which is smothered in a decadent bechamel sauce, ham, and cheese, will take you straight to a café patio in the streets of Paris.
