Heartbreaking news was delivered to Sean McVay and the rest of the McVay family on Tuesday night.
Sean's grandfather, the veteran 49ers general manager John McVay, has gone away. He had reached age 91.
The 49ers declared in a statement that "this is a very sad day for our company and the whole football community."
"John McVay had a key role in putting together the squads that won our five Super Bowl championships.
Most significantly, John was a member of the Hall of Fame who developed real connections with players, coaches, and front office personnel.
The standard and tradition we try to uphold today were established by John's dedication to and services to the 49ers. We are praying and thinking of the McVay family."
