Sam Darnold has been out with an ankle injury since August 26. Darnold was designated to return from injured reserve, according to the Carolina Panthers' announcement made on Wednesday.
Darnold now has a window of 21 days during which to train. At any time within that span, the Panthers have the option to add the USC product on their official roster.
The timing of Darnold's return is pretty favorable for Carolina because Baker Mayfield is now injured.
If all goes according to plan, Darnold might start for the Panthers soon. They will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday in an NFC South matchup.
As the Panthers' starting quarterback in 2021, Darnold had trouble. He completed 59.9 percent of his passes for 2,527 yards, nine touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
The Panthers used P.J. Walker and Jacob Eason as quarterbacks last Sunday. Against the Los Angeles Rams, they only managed 119 passing yards and one interception together.
