Sorry, No Dungeness Crab for Thanksgiving

Humpback whales in San Francisco Bay make Dungeness crab for Thanksgiving dinner nearly impossible.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has delayed the commercial fishing season until December 1.

The non-commercial crabbing season begins on November 5, but crab traps won't be allowed to protect whales.

The state will reevaluate commercial fishing season restrictions and start date on November 23. On November 5, only hoop nets or snares can be used.

The Chronicle says the increase in whale population seems related to a marine heat wave, which drove up anchovy populations this summer.

Recent drone surveys showed 128 whales in the Bay at any given time, and even more near Monterey.
