Three bulb-planting rules

First, ensure good drainage so the bulb isn't flooded. Overwatering or growing bulbs in heavy soils causes fading.

First they sprout without blooming, then they vanish. Instead of garden soil or overwatering, rodents are often blamed.

Because bulbs are buried... Gardeners forget to eat. As gardeners, it's our job to give summer bulbs the nutrients they need to replenish energy spent on leaves and flowers

A spring composting will provide enough nutrients to keep bulbs happy.

Grow the foliage, not the flower. Many gardeners... Cut foliage to plant annuals or tidy up flopping leaves after blooms are done.

Untidy bulbs are productive because their leaves store energy for next year's bloom.
